Can you sin in your dream?

1. Definition of Sin

In 1 John 3:4 we find that "sin is lawlessness." In other words, sin is a transgression of God's laws. God's laws are plainly laid out in the bible.

1a. What are the laws?

The 2 most important laws are laid out By Jesus in Mark 12:30-31 "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these." The rest of the 10 commandments can be found in Exodus 20:1-17.

2. When does sin begin?

In other words, is sin when you actually commit the transgression of the law? For example, does the sin against God's laws of not stealing begin when you physically take possession of something that does not belong to you? Perhaps in criminal law proceedings, that would be the case. When does the sin of adultery begin? When a married man has sexual intercourse with a woman other than his wife? From a human perspective, perhaps. However, when it comes to God's perspective, Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 "but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." The keyword here is "lust." Lust is not an act, but a thought! The bible refers to thoughts like this as matters of the heart. We find further meaning for the "heart" in Matthew 15:19 "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders." In other words, "heart" in the bible is interchangeably used with the word "mind."

3. Is being conscious a requisite of sin?

As all matters that require clarification when it comes to the Christian walk, let's refer to the bible, the Word of God. In Romans 3:20 it says "Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin." So becoming conscious of sin requires the knowing of the law. Since knowledge is a conscious act and therefore to sin one must be conscious.

4. What is a dream?

Dreams are the images, thoughts and feelings experienced while asleep. In other words, the pictures we look at, the shows we watch, the thoughts we have while conscious, the feelings we experience while conscious will be reflected in our dreams.

4a. Do all dreams occur in an unconscious state?

This is the most important question. Scientist for years thought you must be unconscious to be in a state of a dream. However, later studies in 1978 by Keith Hearne of the University of Hull discovered not all muscles are paralyzed in a dream. In fact he noted the eyes move. That became known as REM, rapid eye movement. This is a state where the dreamers know they are dreaming. Some refer to this as lucid dreaming. However, I do not subscribe to the herb sellers on the net that try to induce lucid dreams. This is a natural phenomenon. There are certain dreams, where you are totally unconscious and when you wake up, you don't have the slightest inkling of even having a dream. However, there is a state between being fully awake and having an unconscious dream, where you know you are dreaming and you have control over the content of your dream. You have the ability to wake up if you so choose, but you do not.

5. So does sinning during a "lucid" dream constitute a sin?

The answer by definition is yes. If you have control over the content of your dream, then you are in fact sinning as the sin begins in the "heart." This is of course the biblical meaning of "heart" and not your physical heart. The biblical meaning of heart is interchangeably used with the word "mind."

6. Why am I having these sinful dreams?

It is not enough to suppress you sinful thoughts as that is not how one is to be free from sin. If you merely suppress your thoughts, they will probably come out in your dreams. Instead you must completely purge yourself from sin. The ONLY way one can do that is through Jesus Christ. You must ask Jesus to come into your heart, to fill you up with his Holy Spirit and to completely take away the desire of your sin. Jesus said in John 8:31-32 "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." Meditate and pray over how Jesus would like for you to continue in His word. Does He want you to read the bible everyday? Does he want you to stay away from whatever is causing you to sin? Does He want you to confess your sin to Him and sin no more? Does He want you to permanently give up certain habits? Jesus said in John 8:34 "everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin." There is only One Way of being free from the slavery of sin and that is through Jesus Christ. Jesus said in John 8:34 "So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed."
